Abnormal Pap Test Results and Colposocopy
A Colposcopy is usually performed to help your doctor find the reason for an abnormal Pap smear, although this is not the only reason. Other reasons include an abnormal appearance of the cervix, vagina, or vulva.
If you need this procedure, we recommend that you do not schedule the procedure when you anticipate having your period.
During the procedure there may be some discomfort, including cramping and pinching when the biopsy tissue is removed. Bleeding and infection are possible after colposcopy, but are very rare. You may have a dark vaginal discharge for a couple of days after the procedure. However, please call the office right away if you have any of the following:
Don't use tampons and don't put anything in your vagina for two days or until your doctor tells you it's safe. Also don't have sexual intercourse for 2 days following the colposcopy.
If a biopsy was taken, it will be sent to the lab for analysis. You will receive a call from our office to inform you of the results.
